Sumner Girls Hold off Port Angeles, 51-41

A fourth quarter comeback gives Sumner a 51-41 victory over Port Angeles in the Seamount Sub-Division playoffs.

A fourth quarter comeback propelled Sumner girls 51-41 over Port Angeles in the Seamount sub-division playoff game. The Spartans struggled to stay in the game early, ending the half down by one, 24-23. Through the third quarter, the Spartans remained down by one, but caught stride in the fourth.

"We weren't really ready to play," said Sumner head coach Rob Thayer, "but we came out focused in the second half."Β

Despite a scoreless first half, leading scorer Angie Wagar-Sanchez jump-started the offense with 8 points in the second half. The Spartans also found support from Erika Olsen with a game high 19 points, and a double-double Kaitlin King, 10 points on 14 rebounds. However, it was lock down defense and transition offense that helped the Spartans outscore Port Angeles 16-5 in the fourth quarter. A couple of costly technical fouls late in the fourth kept the game out of reach for the Port Angeles Roughriders.

With the victory, Sumner moves on to face White River tomorrow for the no. 1 and 2 seeds out of the sub-division.
