The first students of Donald Eismann Elementary’s “KPlus” Reading Mastery for Kindergarten program celebrated with a graduation ceremony on Friday, June 13.
“KPlus” Reading Mastery for Kindergarten was implemented by Donald Eismann Elementary in February 2014. The 38 “Super Readers” started off the year at below-grade reading levels, and learned skills such as symbol identification, rhyming and comprehension activities, spearheaded by kindergarten paraeducator Naomi Zantello. After extensive exercises and activities, the students were able to expand their abilities to be reading at their grade-level by the end of the year.
To celebrate their achievement, the graduates were joined by fellow students, parents and teachers at an afternoon ceremony. Donations and treats were given out as part of the festivities, including t-shirts and teacher appreciation gift bags from Tehaleh, frozen yogurt from Menchie’s and children’s books from Wal-Mart. The graduation ceremony served as a big motivator for the kids and helped to announce their accomplishments to the school and larger community.

“Early intervention is critical for meeting grade level standard but it’s a priority for us at Donald Eismann Elementary, where we want all of our students, even the youngest, to excel,” said Susie Black, principal at Donald Eismann Elementary. “Our kindergarteners were able to set a goal to read at grade level and accomplish it. That’s such a great achievement, especially as they continue on with their education.”
