Our Beehive was knocked over today, so we put it back together and got a good look at the bees beautiful handy work. We let our honey bees build out their own comb, they do such an amazing job, why interfere with perfection? We extracted 1 1/2 gallons of honey from just 5 frames 2 weeks ago and shared it with our neighbors, then we entered 3 jars at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup at the last minute and won a Blue Ribbon!
We are preparing our hive for the coming winter and only take some of the bees precious honey for ourselves, never all of it. We leave them with enough so they'll survive without being artificially fed.
If you're going to use a herbicide or pesticide on your property, such as Roundup, please tell any local beekeepers that you know so they have a chance to cover their hives and not let their bees fly that day.
Glyphosate, an ingredient used in the popular herbicide found in nearly every big box store, is a contributing factor to colony collapse disorder.
A mixture of vinegar and water can be sprayed on your weeds instead of a toxic herbicide, boiling hot water from a tea kettle for that matter has the same effect, they both kill the weeds without harming our important pollinator, the honey bee.
