Toxic Algae Warning Issued For Lake Tapps

BONNEY LAKE, WA - The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has detected a toxic algae bloom in Lake Tapps, which poses a health risk to humans, but especially to pets. The algae - which is easy to identify due to its green color - is only dangerous if you can see it, and so far has only been spotted near Tapps Island at the northwest end of the lake.

Coming into contact with the algae, either by swallowing water or brushing up against it, can cause skin irritation, muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea. Toxic algae is more harmful to pets, according to an advisory issued by the city of Bonney Lake, because animals are more likely to drink contaminated water.

Toxic algae blooms often happen at lakes and ponds around the state during warmer months. Increased leakage of fertilizer into waterways can contribute to the blooms.
