📰 News we're reading

• Burien advances resolution to protect immigrant communities (kiro7.com) — Burien residents should know that the City Council has moved a strengthened sanctuary policy one step closer to approval, with a final consent agenda vote set for Oct. 12. The proposal would sharply limit cooperation with federal civil immigration enforcement, restrict collection of immigration status information, and require staff training on Burien’s protections and state law.

• Friday, October 2 (wa.gov) — A statewide news roundup includes a Burien story about a local gas station installing bulletproof glass after three robberies, highlighting ongoing safety concerns for workers and customers. The collection also links to coverage of Medicaid cuts, Amazon’s data-center investments, insurance cancellations, and other Washington-focused political, economic, and community developments that could indirectly affect Burien residents.

• WA's nation-high minimum wage rising to nearly $18 an hour in 2027 (spokanepublicradio.org) — Workers in Burien and across Washington are set for a minimum wage increase to $17.73 an hour on Jan. 1, 2027, with Burien’s local rate remaining above the state floor. The article explains how inflation drives the annual adjustment, notes higher city-specific wages, and outlines related changes for teen workers, app-based drivers, and overtime eligibility.
