Lourdes Becker spent six hours last Sunday with a very cold hose in her hand washing the mud off 1400 pounds of donated squash. Her efforts will add to the stocks of food available to those in need of food assistance in the Edmonds area.
A team of volunteers drove up to a farm near Snohomish where a portion of a field had been set aside to provide food banks an opportunity to harvest squash and pumpkins.
This month, Edmonds Art Walk (AWE) is teaming up with the Edmonds Food Bank to help fight hunger in our area. “We are excited to partner with our local food bank. With hundreds of people exposed to the community through AWE each month, we wanted to use our platform to give back. We want to make donating food easy for the community.” said AWE board member Beth Sanger, who owns Ombu Salon and Spa.
Every Tuesday morning, a small army of volunteers converges on the Edmonds Methodist Church to fight the ongoing war on hunger in our community.

As a result of Federal reductions in funding for “food stamps” or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) families in Washington state will see an additional cut in assistance for the months of November and December. The State of Washington will pick up the slack left by Federal reductions by January, but the short fall is anticipated to strain the local food banks even more as we come into the holiday season.
