Assistant Chief of Police Gerry Gannon Retires After 32 Years of Service

Assistant Chief of Police Gerald Gannon has announced his retirement from the Edmonds Police Department effective June 30, 2012, following 32 years of dedicated service to the community.

A familiar face around town, Gannon was hired by Edmonds Police on Dec. 16, 1979, after four years in the Marine Corps.

During his service with the Edmonds police, Gannon held the following positions:

• Police officer
• Five-year veteran motorcycle officer assigned to traffic enforcement
• Three-year assignment as a detective
• 1993 detective on the Regional Arson Task Force
• South Snohomish County SWAT team member from 1986 to 1995 
• Promotion to sergeant, assigned to the Patrol Division, in 1996
• Rank of administrative sergeant in 1999
• Promoted to Assistant Chief of Police in 2002

While an administrative sergeant, Gannon helped the department move into the new Maxwell-McGinnis Public Safety Building.

He was also a key member of the team that helped Edmonds Police Department achieve national accreditation in 2000 with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

After shepherding Edmonds Police Department through the accreditation process, Gerry Gannon served as an assessor for accreditation exercises for other law enforcement agencies.

Gannon was promoted to Assistant Chief of Police on Feb. 16, 2002. From February 2002 to May 2008 he supervised Edmonds Police Department’s Field Services Division, and since May 2008 he has supervised the Support Services Division.

Assistant Chief Gannon graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2003.

"Gerry has touched a number of lives over the course of his career, not only by his selfless service to the citizens of Edmonds, but also through his mentoring of fellow police officers and as an advocate for those whom he supervised," said Edmonds Police Chief Al Compaan.

As a testament to his outstanding service, Gannon was named Edmonds Police Officer of the Year in 1995.

However, his contributions to the Edmonds community were not limited to police work; he has been a member of the Edmonds Exchange Club since 2004 and a long-time supporter of the Special Olympics Program.
