Brighton School(R) Students Design Robotic Bug Garden

Kindergartners used science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) skills to design and control the garden

LYNNWOOD, Wash. (June 24, 2015) – Kindergartners from Brighton School in Lynnwood recently created a robotic flower and bug garden – inspired by a project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Students attached flowers with embedded LED lights and speakers to Arduino microcontrollers, and attached sensors beneath the flowers. They then released electronic Hexbugs to roam the garden. Whenever the Hexbugs came near a sensor, the lights above would flash and music recorded by the kindergartners would play. The students created and wired the flowers, speakers and sensors, and wrote the programming code to make the garden come to life. This project helped students learn how to utilize technology and programming to further develop their STEAM skills.
