Extra Law Enforcement For Festivals, Graduations, Summertime Activities

Snohomish County law enforcement officers will be patrolling county roadways during the next three weekends in order to reach their goal of zero traffic deaths during the month of June.

Their focus will be on drivers who speed or drive impaired as well as underage drinkers and those that provide alcohol to minors. Washington State Liquor Control Board Enforcement officers will also be working in tandem.

“We know that traffic fatalities increase during the busy summer months with more vehicles on the roadways for high school graduations, area festivals and the start of summertime vacations and activities. We want to make sure everyone gets home safely,” says Tracy McMillan, Snohomish County DUI & Target Zero Task Force manager. 

These specialized traffic safety patrols are funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. Problem roadways will be targeted throughout Snohomish County during the month of June.

For instance, on June 16, law enforcement will be working in the areas of Marysville and Arlington. Troopers, deputies and officers will be patrolling Interstate 5, Highways 530 and 9, as well as city and county roadways. 

Law enforcement also want to encourage drivers to share the road with motorcycles. June 18 is “National Ride to Work Day” as noted on the www.ridetowork.org Web site. 

“Sadly, two motorcyclists lost their lives last month in Snohomish County,” says McMillan. “Please drive and ride safely and always have a designated driver if you choose to go out and celebrate.”
