The MOVE 60! pilot program is intended to fight childhood obesity and other health problems.

Before and after school on Monday as many as 400 elementary-aged students in the Edmonds School District laced up their sneakers and got moving as part of the inaugural MOVE 60! program being piloted at eight elementary schools.

The program is funded by a three-year, $917,000 grant from the Verdant Health Commission, formerly the South Snohomish County Commission for Health.

The goal of the program, which was kicked off during last month, will serve as the official kick-off event for t is to get students exercising 60 minutes per day by participating in the free program either before or after school. It's intended for students who need more exercise, may have childhood obesity or health issues, or do not have the opportunity to play on a sports team, said program co-coordinators and district physical education teachers Jennifer Hershey and Jennifer McCloughan.
