Former Edmonds Assistant Fire Chief Reappointed to State Post

Snohomish County Fire District 1 Assistant Chief Mark Correira has been reappointed to the Washington Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Steering Committee.

Correira, who lives in Mukilteo, was the assistant fire chief in Edmonds until the city before Edmonds merged its services with Fire District 1.

This is the state’s highest appointed committee on emergency medical service (EMS). The committee’s 30 members represent hospitals, physicians, fire departments, local health departments, consumers and other affected groups. The committee’s responsibilities include:

• Advising the state Department of Health regarding EMS and trauma care needs throughout the state.
• Reviewing regional EMS and trauma care plans and recommending changes before the state Department of Health adopts the plans.
• Reviewing proposed departmental rules for EMS and trauma care.
• Recommending modifications in rules regarding EMS and trauma care.

Correira was first appointed to the committee a year ago by Governor Christine Gregoire. His reappointment is for a two-year term.

Correira oversees EMS operations at Fire District 1, which serves more than 225,000 residents in unincorporated south Snohomish County, Brier, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace and Woodway.

As the largest provider of fire and emergency medical services in the county, Fire District 1 responded to nearly 18,000 calls last year—close to 80 percent of which were for emergency medical aid. All Fire District 1 firefighters are certified as either emergency medical technicians or as paramedics, and respond to medical aid calls as well as fires and other emergencies.
