House Passes Same-Sex Marriage Bill

The vote was 55-43.

The same-sex marriage bill that was passed by the Washington state Senate last week passed on Wednesday in the Washington House of Representatives.

The vote was 55-43 in favor of Senate Bill 6239.

The bill is now on its way to Gov. Chris Gregoire to be signed.

The Washington Secretary of State Web site has published an FAQ on SB 6239.

The bill will allow same-sex couples to legally marry in the state. Opponents of the bill say that they will fight the legislation with a ballot measure to allow voters to overturn the decision.

Currently, same-sex marriage is allowed in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont and Washington, D.C. Washington state currently allows domestic partnerships.
