Fire Marshal Reminder: Purchase of Fireworks on Internet Is Illegal

Today is the first day of summer, which means it's time to discuss fireworks.

State Fire Marshal Charles Duffy wants to remind Washingtonians that the purchase of fireworks over the Internet is illegal.

Although individual use of fireworks have been banned in Edmonds since 1993, they are allowed in surrounding areas of unincorporated Snohomish County, which includes Esperance, from 9 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on July 4 only.

In Washington, fireworks must be purchased from a licensed retail fireworks stand during the legal sales period. Orders for fireworks cannot be placed over the Internet or posted on Web sites such as Craigslist.

Duffy says to remember the three B’s of fireworks safety:

• Be prepared—Have water nearby and put pets indoors
• Be safe—Only adults should light fireworks
• Be responsible—Clean up fireworks debris
