About the Kenmore Mural Project…
The 188’ by 12’ mural, to be located along 73rd Ave NE wall of Saint Vincent de Paul, will “tell the history of Kenmore” through imagery that resonates with the community in the form of an interactive, educational mural about the cultural history of our city. The City has determined artwork along this wall will be of benefit to the citizens of Kenmore because this location is highly visible to pedestrians and passing traffic. This mural is meant to celebrate the cultural history of Kenmore and strengthen the community’s “sense of place”.
Many businesses and organizations have graciously sponsored the Kenmore Mural project, and it is hoped that other community members will support the project as well. The collaborative efforts of the community will only elevate the pride stemming from projects such as this.
The Kenmore Mural Project is honored to have the support of The Arts of Kenmore, a long-standing organization supporting the arts in our community and public schools. Debbie Gianelli is the current Vice President of The Arts of Kenmore and has kindly shared her experiences as a member of the organization.
Debbie stated, “The Arts of Kenmore hosts, sponsors, and encourages active participation in all forms of the arts by the citizens of the area to enrich lives and community. We operate The Kenmore City Hall Art Gallery, which provides four to five exhibits each year displaying works from local artists including a youth art exhibit every winter. We also share the cost 50/50 with the City of Kenmore to purchase one or more works of art from the Kenmore Art Show entries to add to the city hall art collection. This year, with Mayor Baker's encouragement, we piloted a project to paint local fire hydrants, further enhancing Kenmore's public art. We are also willing to support and partner on other public art projects such as the Kenmore Mural.”
The annual Kenmore Art Show hosted by the organization gives local artists the opportunity to display and sell their artwork. The Kenmore Arts show has grown in size year after year, displaying the liveliness of arts in our community. Debbie best describes the Kenmore Art Show as, “a high-quality, well-respected juried show that attracts submissions from hundreds of artists…The show is held annually, for five days in June on the beautiful campus of Bastyr University in Saint Edwards State Park. Art lovers can enjoy paintings, sculpture, photography, artisan works, and youth art. Most days there are also live musical performances and everything is free!”
Debbie’s enthusiasm for the arts is evident in an experience she had at last year’s Art Show. “…the theme of the Art Show was nature. We received many outstanding entries that featured nature in every way, shape and form from waterfalls, frogs and trees to rocks and sunsets. I was most intrigued, though, by artist Linda Gisbrecht. She entered several unique bead embroidery jewelry pieces that were exquisite in craftsmanship, color and depiction of flowers, bees, a heron and dragonfly. This was her first time entering the show so I went to her website to learn more. There I watched a video of her creating her art pieces outside in nature as she explained her profound connection and relationship with nature and the world around her. It made me realize how passionate artists are about what they create and it made me proud to be able to offer artists a venue to display their work.”
