Landmark Robin Hood Lanes Bowling Alley Could be Replaced by Walgreens

Edmonds could have a regional drugstore chain on one corner and the nation's largest on the other. It's part of the transformation of the Westgate commercial district, which has been the center of new business activity of late.

, a mainstay in Edmonds' Westgate neighborhood for 50 years, could be gone in 2012.

Stephen Clifton, Edmonds' economic development director, said Tuesday that Walgreens has applied for permits to move into and remodel the property in 2012.

Walgreens, based in Illinois and the country's largest chain of drugstores, would face competition from Bartell Drugs, which is across the street in the Westage Shopping Center on the southwest corner of Edmonds Way and 100th Avenue West.

There are currently five Walgreens within five miles of Edmonds: two in Lynnwood and three in Shoreline.

According to My Edmonds News, Robin Hood Lanes owner Mike Gubsch said the land is owned by an Edmonds family while the Robin Hood Lanes building is owned by John Gunther, who used to own the bowling alley. Gubsch told My Edmonds News that he and Gunther had been trying to buy the land but the family was unwilling to sell.

The demise of Robin Hood Lanes could be a sign of things to come for Westgate which, along with the Five Corners area, .

There has been a lot of business activity in Westgate business area of late: Last week, in a site currently occupied by Shell, which would be demolished. Within the last month, both and have opened in Westgate, and opened earlier this year.
