Reserve Officer Richard “Dick” Anway, who was retired, died Feb. 19  at age 67 in the company of family and friends at Swedish/Edmonds Hospital in Edmonds.

Anway was a longtime resident of Edmonds and served as a reserve officer with the City of Edmonds for nearly 36 years.

Anway volunteered countless hours throughout the decades, patrolling the streets of Edmonds and assisting with community events such as the 4th of July, Halloween, Taste of Edmonds and the Arts Festival.

Anway always worked a patrol shift or ferry traffic during holidays so that the regular officers could have those days off with their families, said Sgt. Don Anderson of the Edmonds Police Department, who added that Anway was consistently one of the most reliable reserve officers in the department.

Anway was also the final reserve officer, as the program ended with his retirement in 2009. Even after he retired as a reserve officer, Anway continued to serve as a volunteer for the police department, setting up the radar trailer and continuing to help plan community events.

Anway was named Edmonds Police Department Reserve Officer of the Year in 2000 and 2005.  He received letters of commendation in 2005 and 2006. And he was honored as grand marshal of the Edmonds Fourth of July parade in 2006.

“Dick was one of the most giving persons I have ever known," said Edmonds Chief of Police Al Compaan. "The police department and the community were his family.”

Anway is survived by his siblings, Marilyn Long and Ron Anway, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A public memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at , 22901 Edmonds Way, Edmonds.
