Medical Marijuana Back on the Agenda in Edmonds—At Least for Discussion

Discussion of Gov. Gregoire's proposal will be discussed by Public Safety and Human Resources committees.

Medical marijuana is back in the spotlight for the Edmonds City Council.

The city's Public Safety and Human Resources committees on Tuesday will discuss Gov. Gregoire's proposal to legalize medical marijuana. It was late last month that Gregoire, filed a petition with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to reclassify marijuana.

Gregoire joined Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee want to allow the drug to be distributed legally for medical use. According to the Associated Press, Washington voters approved a medical marijuana law in 1998. That law gives doctors the right to recommend, but not prescribe, marijuana for people suffering from cancer and other conditions that cause "intractable pain."
