EDMONDS, WA -- More than half of all marriages end in divorce and many parents, stepparents, and even counselors struggle to discuss the topic of divorce with children, but a new book titled Character Building: Divorce Stories and Strategies to Help Your Child Heal, is designed to help adults initiate this essential dialogue with kids of all ages.
“Ninety percent of children with parents who are in the midst of a divorce experience some very significant effects. They see a decline in school performance. Many lose interests in friends, hobbies and once-loved activities. A large percentage of children experience sleep difficulties and somatic complaints such as headaches, stomach aches and fatigue,” explained author Jean Tracy.
Tracy, who is also the founder of KidsDiscuss.com, is a former teacher and experienced family counselor. It was her work in the field of family counseling that spurred her to write Character Building: Divorce Stories and Strategies to Help Your Child Heal.
"Because many children struggle with divorce, it's essential to provide them with coping strategies. They must be prepared for the big changes that divorce brings -- living in two homes, living in a blended family, dealing with loneliness, self-blame and anger," Tracy explained, adding, "I wrote Character Building: Divorce Stories and Strategies to Help Your Child Heal to provide parents with a way to start those important, difficult dialogues. Each of the 23 stories offers the child an opportunity to voice opinions, discuss problems and come up with solutions."
Character Building: Divorce Stories and Strategies to Help Your Child Heal offers an array of different stories, each with a distinct message. Some of the stories include:
Ÿ I Want to Live in One House -- Gracie learns the power of lists, habits, and family meetings as she learns to adapt to living in two homes.
Ÿ When’s Dad Coming? -- Danny creates a list of fun activities when his dad misses their visitation date.
Ÿ I Can’t Concentrate -- Jason’s teacher gives him a strategy to help him focus on the present when he’s worried about home life.
Ÿ My Parents Still Fight -- Molly uses a special breathing technique and calms herself when her parents argue.
Ÿ I Caused the Divorce -- Jackson uses a pillow strategy to release his anger. His mother comes to the rescue and relieves his guilt.
Parents are encouraged to provide their children with a three-ring binder where their child can stow their drawings and captions that they’ll be encouraged to create while reading Character Building: Divorce Stories and Strategies to Help Your Child Heal.
“Many parents get so absorbed with their own powerful emotions and stress associated with the divorce that some fail to realize how much their children need support during and after the divorce,” said Tracy. She concluded, “Parents and counselors have the power to assist children now and this can go a long way toward preventing problems in the future.”
