WATCH: Patty Murray Rips Betsy DeVos, Says She Was 'Panned Across the Country'

Murray had sought a second hearing on the Secretary of Education nominee, but Republicans blocked it.

EDMONDS, WA - U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, the ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, forcefully denounced President Donald Trump's pick for Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos on Tuesday.

The committee voted to move DeVos' nomination to a full vote in the Senate, but Democrats voted against that move after allegations of plagiarism and other issues came to light. According to the Washington Post, DeVos lifted quotes from Obama administration press releases and a trade magazine without attribution.

Murray and other Democrats had pushed for a second committee hearing to ask DeVos more questions, including about the plagiarism allegations. But committee chairman U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee, would not allow it.

"Ms. DeVos is a billionaire with extraordinarily complicated and opaque finances - both in her own holdings, as well as those of her immediate family," Murray said in the committee. "She has invested in education companies for decades. Her ethics paperwork raises a significant number of questions about the companies she plans to remain invested in, as well as significant numbers of assets that we simply don’t know enough about. And she has refused to answer basic questions about her finances that would allow us to make sure that she won’t continue to have serious conflicts of interest were she to be confirmed.”
