Wounded Mount Vernon Officer Improving, Police Say
Mount Vernon Police released an update on the officer's condition Thursday.

MOUNT VERNON, WA - The police department is reporting that officer Mike "Mick" McClaughry is showing signs of improvement as he recovers in a Seattle hospital after being shot in the head last week.
The department said Thursday that he remains sedated. McClaughry, 61, was shot last week while canvassing a neighborhood during an investigation into another shooting.
"Mick continues to show signs of improvement, but will remain sedated for a while longer for assessment and monitoring purposes," the department wrote in a newsletter. "Mick has family and friends by his side and the community continues to provide and care for them all in this time of need."

In connection with the shooting, Skagit County prosecutors this week charged 44-year-old Ernesto Lee Rivas Sr. with attempted murder, as well as Isaias Gonzales, 16, who was charged as an adult. A 15-year-old was also charged with attempted murder, but prosecutors want to move his case out of juvenile court. Rivas and the two teens engaged in a standoff with police after McClaughry's shooting, authorities say. During the standoff, occupants inside the home fired guns at police.
