'A LOT of Art' Comes Alive Saturday in Enumclaw

Much of the work is done by artists not shown in the local gallery.

The second “A LOT of Art” event of the month will take place Saturday, Aug. 27, in the parking lot on the corner of Cole and Stevenson in downtown Enumclaw, next to the Chamber of Commerce building.

The event is put on by Arts Alive! Center for the Arts, 1617 Cole St.

The event showcases art done in the community. Most of the art is done by artists who are not featured in the Arts Alive! Gallery. Like photographers “we just don’t have room for,” said Elaine Lynest, one of the instructors.

Patch recently talked with some artists about their craft during one of Lynest’s classes. The gallery offers classes in all art mediums almost every day of the week.

Charles Hubbard is one artist featured in the gallery. He likes to work with pastels. His White Tiger was so popular that it also has been
put on a t-shirt that sells for $20 at the gallery. There’s a limited edition of only 35 available.

Janet Berthon works in pastels, pencil, does sculptures and is now getting into making jewelry.

“I’m either multi-talented or have a split personality,” she said with a laugh.

Berthon said she likes getting critiqued by Lynest.

“We come here to get information about our work,” she said. “We want to learn something.”

Otherwise, she could just do her artwork at home, right? Not really, she said.

“I have to get away to do art,” Berthon said. “There’s always something to do at home.”

Lynest said Arts Alive! is not having an auction this year, because during these tough economic times it’s tough to ask businesses for items to auction off, and also hard for people to buy in general.

Instead, Arts Alive! is going to have a drawing for a quilt donated  by the Crystal Quilters. Cost to get in on the drawing is $1. Arts Alive! will be selling tickets at Saturday’s “A LOT of Art” event. The drawing will take place in December.
