
Reality TV is a genre that gets a bad rap, mostly because the majority is god-awful argumentative schlock. There are a select few shows that rise above this perception, and elevate the genre beyond anything that’s ever been broadcast on Bravo. For me, reality TV is a fairly narrow genre. It doesn’t include game shows (yes, the Survivor and American Idol types are all glorified game shows), talk shows, or history lessons. Think of reality shows as a series of documentaries. A bit more focused, allowed to take considerable detours over the course of a season, but always reverts back to the main idea. These are my favorites, and what I feel best describes the genre as it is on TV today.
