Just a Quick Comment on Today’s Weather

I noticed in today's paper that the reason we are stuck in a cold, wet summer is because the atmosphere is "locked" into this weather pattern.

I noticed in today’s paper that the reason we are stuck in a cold, wet summer is because the atmosphere is “locked” into this weather pattern.  Meteorologists are always trying to find a reason for what happens in the weather (as if this could make us feel better) but their explanations are more along the lines of descriptions.

For example, take the incident of an elephant escaping from a circus.  The elephant escapes by working out the bolt that holds its chain.  Then, the elephant runs into the town and, bypassing most stores, breaks into a Safeway, finds the fruit aisle and gobbles up all the apples, but leaves the bananas.  Finally, the elephant tries to hide behind a billboard, but it is found and returned to the circus.  However, his is only a description of what happened.

An explanation of what happened would entail understanding what the elephant was thinking of when it broke loose.  Unfortunately, finding out what an elephant is thinking is a hard as figuring out why we are missing summer here and why in other parts of the country the thermostat is set at “baked potato."

As I wrote in today’s blog, the atmosphere moves itself along and it just happened to move itself into our goofy weather.  Eventually it will move itself into something else.  When that happens, let’s hope that there is still some summer left.
