Day Hikes Around Enumclaw #6--Silver Forest

If you want an easy, relatively level high altitude hike with spectacular views, try the Silver Forest Trail at Sunrise.  Trailhead is on the downhill side of the parking lot.  Near the start, the 1.2 mile trail has two viewpoints right on the canyon's edge overlooking the Emmons Glacier, a source of our White River.  The rest of the trail takes you through wildflower meadows, with an occasional silver snag, left over from a fire long ago.  Most of these trees are gone now, replaced by small sub-alpine trees that have grown up since.  (The trail name has become a little misleading over time.)  After your hike, have a lunch in the picnic area above the opposite side of the parking lot.  Keep your suntan lotion and other goodies bears like to eat close by--they are active in the area right now.

Best time to go is in the morning--easy if you live in Enumclaw.  On summer weekends, the parking lot is often full by noon.
