Email to the Editor: Navy Mom Grateful for Kindness of Community

Brenda Seitz checks in with Patch after sending daughter Carson off to her next assignment with the U.S. Navy in San Diego and reflects on why it's so great to live in Enumclaw.

It has been a wonderful two weeks but bittersweet as we took Carson to the airport yesterday to start her new life in San Diego. Aside from celebrating Christmas and New Year, Carson was also able to celebrate her brother’s birthday on Dec. 26 and dad’s birthday on the 28th—it does not get much better than that.

What started with a simple photo project evolved into something wonderful; not only did it give me the opportunity to do something special for my daughter; it gave me the opportunity to meet so many nice people within my community.  It was my intention to take pictures (with the Merry Christmas sign in tow) to include friends, teachers and local businesses which were familiar to her—but somehow it escalated into a project in which I found myself asking total strangers to hold the sign. I was so well received and having so much fun that I found myself packing the sign and camera around town for that impromptu moment. People were so generous and more than willing to take time out for me, and so many people would open up to me how they too had family or friends in the military or to share a kind word in support of Carson. I found that genuine small-town goodness is alive and well in Enumclaw—how lucky I have been to be able to raise both of my children here.

Happy New Year.
