Enumclaw Equestrians Headed to State

Ninety percent of team riders will be participating in the state competition taking place May 12 to May 15 in Moses Lake.

The Enumclaw High School Equestrian team had its final District 6 meet last weekend in Elma, and according to parent Carina Davis, "once again, we dominated our competition in numerous events! One of the highlights was the 12 man drill team taking 1stΒ place, once again. They are undefeated going into our state competition in just 3 weeks!"

Winning is cool, said Enumclaw coach and Washington High School Equestrian Teams (WAHSET) District 6 chairperson Kamie Storer, but it's not just about that.Β What makes all theΒ high school equestrian events worth it is hanging out with a diverse group of horse sports enthusiasts, she said.

The WAHSET program, which this school year involved teams from more than 100 highΒ schools, includes bothΒ  timed rodeo-style events and performance events that are judged as well as two different drill team events.

At an equestrian meet, which is similar to track and field meets, athletes can compete in five individual events and any number of team events. The 25 equestrian events are divided into timed events such as barrel racing and performance events such as hunt seat, Storer explained.

The difference is that "equestrian meets usually lastΒ three to fourΒ days and are run entirely with volunteer support," she said.

Other schools that compete under District 6 include Mossyrock, Chehalis, Centralia, Tumwater, Bellingham, Woodland and Port TownsendΒ high schools.Β

At the state meet, athletes from all six Washington state districtsΒ compete for individual honors in events. The points an athlete earns placing in an event go to awarding team titles.

At this weekend's final meet in Elma, Enumclaw'sΒ drill team, coached by Dan Mc CallisterΒ and working 4's drill, coached by Courtney Valvoda bothΒ took first place at district.

Also taking top district honors were Haley Davies in showmanship and working pairs with her partner Rachel Williams also winning Stockseat (there was a three-way tie for first in Stockseat --Β Breann Simmons-Glen also took first),Β Dyllan Freeburg took golds in Reining, Flags and Drill co-captain; Lexi Kirchner-Dixon, Amy Burrill and Cassidy Stobart alsoΒ took multiple golds home. Anna Wilson won the Jumping class; Breann Simmons-Glen won Saddleseat and Lynsey Peebles took multiple medals home including Trail.Β

Updated May 4: Kendall Flood received the silver in cattle sorting and 12 man drill. Lexi Kirchner-Dixon won the gold in steer daubing, silver in cattle sorting (with Kendall ) and 12 man drill. Sabrina Woodard received the gold in driving, bronze in barells and 12 man drill. Β Briana Calicoat state-qualified in 12 man drill and Ashley Swanson did as well in 4 man working fours drill.

"I wish I could tell you how many gold, silver and bronzes our team wonΒ ..but it would take too long," Storer said. "I am so very proud of all the hard work these riders have put into making our team one of the highest point earners in the state.Β  We are bringing 90 percent of our riders to state and need 33 stalls to accommodate us."
