Neighbors Night Out

Neighbors Night Out (NNO) occurs on August 7th in the evening, and is an opportunity for neighbors to meet and learn about their neighbors. Associated with National Night Out that occurs across the country and more than 100 Washington cities including the very large event in Buckley by the Youth Center, this ‘happening’ was first promoted last year in Enumclaw by the local task force Linking Civility, Compassion and Kindness (LINCCK). LINCCK hopes that the incredible chain reaction of kindness and compassion created by Enumclaw & Black Diamond School District’s effort of Rachel’s Challenge will continue with NNO.

Simply put, our community will be healthier if we know who lives beside us, if a friendly smile can be shared more often, if a helping hand can be offered more readily. Who are the young children nearby that it never hurts to have another pair of watchful eyes for? Is there anyone in your neighborhood with special needs that in a time of emergency would welcome assistance?  Enhancing neighborhood spirit is always beneficial. NNO can be get-togethers of any size occurring in front or back yards, or even blocked-off streets, providing an opportunity for people to meet, socialize, and get to know one another. It can be as simple as root-beer floats, a shared BBQ, or a block party with music and dancing.

NNO is the perfect non-emergency opportunity for firefighters, first responders, police, or city officials, upon their availability, to meet with neighborhood gatherings. By knowing each other, watching out for and being aware of normal patterns of activity in one’s neighborhood, everyone gains from increased security, reduced crime and a sense of community.

LINCCK is putting together a package for emergency preparedness that you may find helpful, and is bringing the Red Cross in the evening of July 24th for basic training in this regard.  Although not a requirement, consider registering with the Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation 802-3206 to arrange possible visits with officials, or to get flyers with NNO information or a postcard that can be given to neighbors stating the particulars for your gathering. Join in the fun and arrange for an NNO in your neighborhood, and let’s get healthy as a community.
