Figuring Out Father's Day

Getting the perfect gift for dad is easier than you think.

Father’s Day.Β  Where do I start?

Remember when we got our dads a tie every year?Β  It seems as though the working world has changed just enough to make this a bit of an outdated notion.Β  Really, of all the dads I know, I can’t think of one who wears a tie regularly and without complaint.Β  And even though we’ve been conditioned by well-meaning retailers to give dad a grill set, isn’t this the same thing as giving mom a blender?Β

And we all know the no-no that can be.

Recently, I posed the question on Facebook: β€œIf only my wife and kids knew, all I want for Father’s Day is…?”

This was similar to the one I posted for ,Β and I had hoped to uncover some unique requests that would help me to find the perfect gift for my husband, or at least something fun and easy for the kids to pick out.Β  Although getting answers from all the daddy-folk in my world was like pulling teeth, I did get some insight into what dads are looking for on this holiday – and it wasn’t what I expected.Β  Not a request for a grill set in sight.Β

Maybe it's not too surprising -- men seem to have very basic wants on this day.Β  They don’t seem to care as much for a high dollar gift that might make women a tad more satisfied, though there were a couple of wishes for new musical equipment that runs in the several hundred dollar range.Β  Men didn’t even ask for food, which I thought would be a no brainer.Β

Instead, the wish seems to be time.Β  Time together and time for himself.Β  Time for a golf game or time without responsibility.Β  Time for video games and time for nothingness.Β  And time for sleep. In addition, men seem to also want a little extra TLC, physical and otherwise, that might be getting overlooked on the day-to-day juggling act of co-raising a family.

So clearly, we women seem to be overthinking the whole thing and adding undue pressure to this annual event.Β  This year, bring your stress level down and give dad what he’s asking for, even if it is indirectly.Β

And in addition to that extra lovin’, maybe toss in a steak dinner. He won’t mind.
