Did you know that the longest natural sand spit in the United States resides here in our state? The Dungeness Spit, located north of Sequim into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, is a National Wildlife Refuge and home to birds, water life and the mammals that frequent our shores. Watch for Orca whales and harbor seals along with over 200 species of birds.
The 5.5 mile stretch is open to those on foot or horseback and visitors who make the trek will be rewarded with the scenery of the New Dungeness Lighthouse as established in 1857. You will find a small museum and tours given by the lighthouse keeper.
Make the trip from Sequim, only 10 miles away and remember to tread lightly and preserve our natural wonders. Because of the delicate balance of this marine environment, there are no dogs, fires or camping allowed.
