Heart of Enumclaw Beats Strong at Rotary
Community rallies to fund three ShelterBoxes in support of the recovery effort in Japan.
Earlier this month, we wrote about several efforts in Enumclaw to help those devastated by the earthquake in Japan last month.Β
It happened to be a lucky coincidence then that at the same meeting of the Enumclaw Rotary Club Thursday where I was invited to share with members what Patch was all about, the Rotary, along with representatives of the , Β andΒ Mutual of Enumclaw,Β announced that in total, they would be sending three ShelterBoxes to Japan after more than $3,000 in donations was collected.
What is a ShelterBox?Β Each large, green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a childrenβs activity pack and other vital items.Β

Between the city of Enumclaw (following a from Mayor Liz Reynolds) and the Chamber of Commerce, $1,151 was raised and dollars were still trickling in, Reynolds told the Rotary Club. Mutual of Enumclaw and the Rotary Club then each chipped in $1,000 -- all funds will be given to ShelterBox.
While it was great to be able to witness the generosity of the city, I want to also put the spotlight on another effort spearheaded by Enumclaw High School junior who is raising money for the Japanese Red Cross through her paper cranes project. Β When we last spoke with Lori Tuesday, she had yet to cross the $200 line in her efforts. Check out her Facebook page for more information about her fundraising efforts!
