Community Corner

Outgoing President Thanks Rotary for its Service to Enumclaw

Organization does so much for the community.

Thank you Rotary Club for a great year. I feel fortunate to have been the president .  Enumclaw Rotary has 55 fantastic members who do an incredible amount of service.

Rotary is a service organization that has five avenues of service: community, club, vocational, international and youth services. The motto of Rotary is service above self

Here is some of the service that the Enumclaw Rotary has performed this past year:

Enumclaw Rotary sponsored the Duck Drop. We raised about $35k for Rotary and the Enumclaw Healthcare foundations through the Duck Sales and Duck Sponsorships.

Enumclaw Rotary gave $10k to Plateau Outreach Ministry, which provides help with food, utilities and clothing for those in need in our community.

The club sponsored the Father-Daughter Dance that raised a net $5,500 for the club, and provided a service that would otherwise been cut by the city.

Enumclaw Rotary provided $1,000 for Friends of the Enumclaw Library to buy subscriptions for magazines and papers because of a shortfall in funding.

The club put up $1,000 for a Japanese Shelter box to help those in need in Japan after the tsunami.

Enumclaw Rotary gave over $500 for the Enumclaw Clothing Bank to help with its 5013c status and to buy clothing that will be distributed to those in need.

The club gave $500 to H.E.L.P,. a nonprofit that is aiding those in Thailand with medical needs.

Enumclaw Rotary served the senior meals at Christmas and Thanksgiving.

The club provided days of services called “Honey Do” projects for senior citizens in need.

Enumclaw Rotary sponsored a "What it means to be an American" essay contest, and awarded scholarships to the top three essays.

The club provided $6,000 in student scholarships.

Enumclaw Rotary put together hundreds of AID caregiver kits as part of our International Service.

The club contributed to Rotary First Harvest.

Enumclaw Rotary participated in giving to Rotary International, whose major project continues to be the elimination of polio in the world.  We are down to just four remaining countries having polio: Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria.

The club hosted a fundraiser at Applebee’s to raise funds for AIDS caregiver kits.

Enumclaw Rotary provided approximately 300 student backpacks with school supplies for needy students.

The club provided $500 to the Enumclaw Youth Center for meals for low-income youth.

Enumclaw Rotary built a miniature golf course under the direction of high school wood shop director Bob Kilmer.  We spent about $5,000 on materials, and about 500 hours of labor to build a first-class miniature golf course that will aid in future fund-raisers.  Our club is so excited for our new putt putt golf course.  We are thankful for the countless hours contributed by Kilmer and Terry Parker in building the course.

Many thanks go to Enumclaw Rotary members Chuck Bender, Allyson Haseman, Trip Hart, and Terry Parker for negotiating with the city to find a future home for the course at the “Rabbit Barn” at the Expo Center. Golf fund-raisers benefit our community and provide  recrea-tional activities for youth.

The club provided scholarships for students to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy.

The Enumclaw Rotary Club meets each week at noon on Thursdays at the Four Seasons Restaurant.  At a time when there are budget shortfalls at all levels of government our community needs more organizations like Rotary that pick up the shortfall in funding different important local services that otherwise would be cut from our community.

Enumclaw Rotary Club has an excellent new president,   Terry Parker.  Terry will do a great job.  If you are concerned about our community and have a desire to serve, we invite you to learn more about our club and how you might be involved as a future potential Rotarian.  If you are interested in Rotary please attend one of our meetings or ask one of our 55 local Rotarians how you can learn more.

Sincerely,

Darrel Dickson
