At , John Locatelli understands the feeling kids have when their moms drag them downtown for shopping errands when they'd rather do anything else.

The only thing that somewhat amused him as a child, he recalls, was when an occasional and particularly interesting window display caught his attention. And so Locatelli, with the help of his brother, engineering the interactive animatronic display currently sitting at the front of Young's this Easter season.

Locatelli, a retired atmospheric sciences researcher from the University of Washington explains how the mechanism works: "There a place on the window where you can put your hand," he said. "What's happening there ... is the capacitor, which is a dielectric between two conductors. And when you put your hand on the window you make one of the conductors a capacitor. There's a circuit that senses the change in the capacitance, and that triggers the relay and that runs everything."
