Sports Roundup: Golfers Finish Strong at State Tourney; Coach, Players Earn Water Polo Honors

Tyler Salsbury paces the boys golf team, and Kelly Sweeney takes home a 10th place finish to pace the girls team. Meanwhile, water polo wraps up with multiple honors

The Enumclaw boys and girls golf teams wrapped up very successful 2011 state tournament performances on Wednesday. The boys took home second place with a team score of 74 points, finishing behind Seattle Prep who led the way scoringΒ 87 points.

The girls took home a fourth place finish with a score of 63.5 points. Mercer Island took home top honors on the 3A girls side of things as they pulled away from Mount Spokane High School and scored 90.5 points.

Tyler Salsbury, the 2010 3A State tournament runner-up led the charge for the Hornets boys squad as he posted a three-under par 141 on the par 72 Meadowood Golf Course in Spokane. Tim Livermore also posted a strong performance as he placed in a three way tie for 12th place shootingΒ a three over par score of 147.

On the girls side, led the way for Enumclaw posting a 36 hole total of 165 -- good enough for 10th place overall among individual competitors on the par 70 Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane. The course played difficult as par was not able to be broken as individual champion Rachel Lewis of Peninsula won the title firingΒ a five over par 145 total for the tournament.

Both teams' performances continue a recent run of excellence at the State 3A classification by the Hornet golf programs. The boys team now has three consecutive finishes in the top five, following up on a third place finish in 2010. The girls team within the past four years has finished in the top four including a 2008 State Championship.

Water Polo Team Garners Honors

Six members of the Enumclaw High School girls water polo team received All League honors for their performances during the 2011 season, according to an update from coach Bob Averill this week.Β 

Ali Ballard and Erin Stucker received First Team All League awards, Kelsey Sonneson and Annie Birklid earned Second Team All League awards, and Hannah Kinniburgh and Megan Lesmeister earned Honorable Mention All League recognition.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister earned Honorable Mention All State honors for her performance at the 2011 State tournament.

Averill himself was named 2011 East Division Coach of the Year.
