Viewfinder: Enumclaw Soccer Falls to Auburn Mountainview 6-2

The Hornets are used to playing on grass, but even they had trouble with the slick conditions produced by Monday's heavy downpour during their match against the visiting Lions.

Spectators during Monday's soccer match between Enumclaw and Auburn Mountainview stood huddled under umbrellas trying to stay out of fast-collecting puddles in the grass as the rain continued to pour.

Imagine trying to play a soccer game in those conditions. The Enumclaw Hornets gave it a good shot but in spite of the heart and hustle displayed out on the field, they were unable to overcome visiting Auburn Mountainview, who took the game 6-2.

"We're used to playing on grass," Coach Skip Ashley said. "Unfortunately, any advantage we could have had on the grass field is taken away because it's so slick -- nobody can stay upright."

But it wasn't the grass alone that factored into the loss. "We didn't play as well as we had earlier this year," Ashley said. "We had a lot of tight ball games where we were right in it until the very end. In this game, we gave up goals that we hadn't earlier in the year."

Still, "We're a young team. We'll learn from it. We'll get better as the season goes on."

The Hornets take on visiting Bonney Lake on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.

"It'll be two equal teams," Ashley said. "As long as the weather holds out and the field can dry out, it should be a better game."
