FISH Food Banks of Pierce County is pleased to announce that FISH’s Mobile Food Bank recently received a Silver Spoon Award from Emergency Food Network. Silver Spoon Awards are given to a small group of “individuals, businesses, groups and organizations that significantly donated their time, talents or resources to help Emergency Food Network fulfill its mission of providing a reliable food supply so that no person in Pierce County goes hungry.” The award, presented in the Partner Feeding Program category, was accepted by Mike Mowat, FISH board member, tireless Mobile Food Bank volunteer, and 2013 Washington State Jefferson Award winner.
Similar to a wholesaler, Emergency Food Network distributes food to more than 60 food banks and hot meal programs annually. FISH Food Banks, the largest food bank network in Pierce County with seven food banks and the Mobile Food Bank, provides nutritious food and emergency services directly to our neighbors in need.
The Mobile Food Bank is FISH’s solution to providing food to low-income neighborhoods with limited access to a food bank or public transportation, without the expense of a brick and mortar facility. Currently, the Mobile Food Bank visits five unique locations each week, including Spanaway, South Tacoma and Woodbrook/Tillicum. Clients are able to “shop” for the foods that best meet their needs. In 2012, 29,000 Mobile Food Bank clients received nutritious food and were able to provide meals for their families. In total, FISH Food Banks served more than 556,000 Pierce County residents last year.
