Native American Basketry Exhibit Opens July 9

The announced Thursday that its original exhibition, “Woven Stories: Native American Basketry of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska” will open  this Saturday, July 9 and run through Oct. 16 at the museum.

“Woven with the strands of each basket in this exhibit is a rich history of the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska,” said Victoria Blackwell, Curator of Exhibits and Collections. 

The exhibit features more than 250 baskets representing the work of weavers from nearly 30 different tribes. Both artifacts and modern woven items will be on display. The exhibit focuses on the artistry behind each basket, but also focuses on the importance of the Native American basket weaving tradition, the meanings behind various patterns and designs, and the natural materials used to create these objects of utility and beauty. Every basket is a woven story – intertwined with tribal legends, a connection to nature, and the experience and artistry of the basket weaver.

“Today, Native American baskets are collected and treasured. They rarely serve the original purpose of gathering berries, transporting food and possessions, or even cradling an infant. But within each weave is a family heritage passed down from female to female, generation to generation,” said Blackwell, “This exhibition strives to share this rich heritage with our visitors.”
