PUTTING THE PROFIT IN NON-PROFIT
There is tremendous satisfaction in helping others. It also makes good business sense.
Every community has service organizations that need more support and business leaders, who want to help, but are not sure which opportunity offers the best way to invest their limited time, talent and financial resources.
It’s time they all had a forum to talk. The Alliance of Women Owned Businesses (AWOB) will provide an informal opportunity to do just that on September 11 at 5:00 at the Inn at Gig Harbor. Business and service organization leaders, who are interested in better serving the special needs in our community, are encouraged to attend.
Non-profits rely heavily on businesses directly or indirectly. Service providers are limited in the help they can offer by the support they receive. Every day we have children in our area who go without because the resources, which service organizations have available, simply cannot stretch far enough to reach all those in need.
Community business leaders can only be leaders if they are there when the community needs them. We all have young people and special needs individuals that need our help. Whether its rooted in helping employees, better serving customers, or being an effective member of the community, business leaders need to know where they can help and how they can get that help.
To get conversation going, representatives of four non-profit organizations will briefly describe what they do and why they do it. The panelists will be Nancy Hohenstein, who will discuss how Altrusa serves children’s needs; Jennifer Hardson, will outline the services offered by the South Kitsap Helpline/Foodbank; Nicci Walsh will share the valuable work done by Hope Sparks; and Gina Anstey will describe the various ways Tacoma Community Foundation helps those in need.
“AWOB offers a natural venue for this important conversation,” Lisa Markman, president of AWOB, observed, “since AWOB is a non-profit run by women business leaders who care about their community.”
“Everyone one of us,” says Markman, “ has felt the deep satisfaction of helping someone in need. What we seldom realize is how our caring reflects well on our community and our businesses. Our September 11th meeting will bring into focus the value we bring to our area by working together. There is real profit in helping non-profits help others.”
