A Jewel of a Park with an Amazing History - Sehmel Homestead Park

The Historic Sehmel Homestead Park is another jewel in Gig Harbor's ear.

Washington State has a very nice "habit" of preserving its history. And the Sehmel Homestead Park is a testimony of it.

All I can say is Wow, what a park!!! The other day, my husband and I had the awesome privilege of discovering the park for the first time. We had our breath taken away when we saw the size of it and all the people enjoying the various ball parks.

We thought we even had met one of the founders who came out of her car at the same time we got there and was talking about checking out the trail to see if the foxglove was pruned back. Later as we looked at the plaques that were posted on the new pavilion and thought we recognized her.

I almost cried as I read the whole history of how the family came here, obtained 160 acres for $18 (which was probably quite a sum back then), and managed to enjoy Gig Harbor, even without the luxury of freeways and bridges.

As modern day explorers, we enjoyed surveying the land, from the meadow with the odd looking tree, to the various gardens and historical trees. It was another testimony of how Gig Harbor cherishes its parks and history. This is definitely a park we would come to often.
