On Wednesday my husband Peter and I went out to Damon Point Park at Ocean Shores. We hiked out about a mile along the beach in hopes of seeing the snowy owls that are wintering in western Washington. We were rewarded with a wonderful display of these beautiful two foot tall birds. They were perched on the silver drift wood and at a quick glance looked like part of the logs.
They seemed rather unconcerned with our presence as long as we were willing to observe them from a distance. Both my husband and I have cameras with 10X zooms and we were able to get great pictures. They are so well camouflaged that we actually flushed up two owls that we had not seen as we continued to walk down the beach. It is quite startling when a bird with a 5 foot wing spread sudden flies over your head.
We also brought our binoculars and watched an owl sitting on a log feasting on a recently caught prey.

The owls will only be down in the lower 48 for a few more weeks. Plan a trip to Ocean Shores, WA. You will not be sorry.
