Insurance 101 - Personal Injury Protection

Do you know what PIP coverage is? How does it protect you and everyone in your car?

Today lets take a moment to clear up some more insurance jargon: PIP.

PIP is another insurance acronym that you may have heard. PIP is short for Personal Injury Protection. Personal Injury Protection is so important for you and your family that the State of Washington requires that your agent offer it to you. In fact, if you don't want the coverage you must reject it in writing. If your agent fails to get your signature rejecting the coverage the insurance company has to add it and charge you for it.

So what does PIP cover?

Personal Injury Protection provides coverage for medical treatment arising from an auto accident, regardless of fault, for you and your passengers. Regardless of fault means that this coverage will pay if you are liable for the accident or even if you are not.

This coverage provides the peace of mind that you and your passengers will have medical coverage even if they don't have their own medical insurance. That is why this coverage has sometimes been referred to as the "Keep your friends your friends coverage."

The coverage usually is offered with limits of $10,000 or $35,000. This limit is per person per incident. So if there are five people in your vehicle and you are hit by another driver and you choose the $35,000 limit, all five people will have up to $35,000 in coverage for medical treatment.

In the State of Washington PIP also provides some coverage for wage loss, loss of services and funeral expenses. For further details please contact your personal agent.

The bitterness of poor coverage lingers long after the sweet price is forgotten.
