Every November, hundreds of neighbors come together so that local families can sit down to a Thanksgiving dinner. The Gig Harbor Thanksgiving Basket Brigade began in 1994, when David Cathers and his wife packed meals in their living room for eight families who had no idea help was on the way. It joined the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation in 2013 and has since grown to serve nearly 38,000 meals.
Today the Brigade packs and delivers an average of 1,300 Thanksgiving baskets each year to families across greater Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula, South Kitsap County, parts of greater Tacoma, and military families at JBLM and Naval Base Kitsap. More than 450 volunteers make it happen over two days.
This year we gather on Friday, November 20 at 4 PM and Saturday, November 21 at 10 AM to pack and deliver. It takes hundreds of helping hands and about $55,000 in donated food and gifts to bring it all together, and there is a place for you in it.
Sign up to volunteer, nominate a family, bring items from our needed-foods list, or make a gift at gghf.info/BasketBrigade. Taking part is free. The reward is priceless.
