Citing the potential increased health threat to the community the decision to cancel the event was made this afternoon by the Executive Board for the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. The Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce made plans to host the event in-person again this year back in the spring when COVID-19 cases were significantly lower. Unfortunately, over the last few weeks the region has seen the delta variant quickly spread. Based on current conditions, the chamber believes that the risk is too high for the event to continue according to Warren Zimmerman, President/CEO.“The Maritime Gig Festival is the largest and most popular family-friendly event in Gig Harbor, and we were excited to bring the community back together this summer to celebrate the reopening of local businesses and reconnecting with our residents,” said Zimmerman. “We are very concerned about the health and safety of our community members, performers, vendors, volunteers and staff, and that is why we decided that canceling was the right thing to do.”The future for the Maritime Gig is solid and the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce is committed to bringing back this event in 2022 according to Zimmerman. “We look forward to celebrating local heritage and our community when it is once again safe to do so. Mark your calendars for June 4th & 5th, 2022 and join us for Maritime Gig”.
