INTRO TO SAILMAKING & SAILREPAIR

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, APRIL 12-13, 2014

10:00 AM TO 4:00 PM

$150.00 for GHB Members or $180.00 for non-GHB members per session

Have you always wanted to learn more about making and repairing

sails? Do you have an old sail or two, that just need a little work to

make them usable again? Join us for this two-day workshop  in sailmaking

and sailrepair.

We will spend some time talking about the ‘how’s’ and ‘whys’ of

traditional sail building, seeing and handling several examples and

discussing the pros and cons of various design techniques. Learn  sail

theory and tuning from a sailmaker’s perspective and how to get the best

performance out of any vessel. We’ll try to understand the stresses and

strains that are put to the cloth, and the various preventative

measures you can take to keep the sails fresh. Despite the ounce of

prevention, repairs are inevitable.

Choose to try your hands at one of several common fixes we’ve

discussed in the workshop. Practice on one of our sails, or get up and

running your own from home. Learn to sew by hand and machine, evaluate

and plan preventative maintenance or repairs, and know when to throw the

towel.

You should finish this course excited to dust off that old sewing

machine in the attic, patch up and improve your suit of sails and tune

your boat for the coming season.

Instructor Bio:

Kristofer Day-  Spending

much of his life working the waterfront and plying the waters of New

England- Kris has been crew of various tall ships and a rigger and

sailmaker by turns on that coast and now this. He brings an interesting

perspective to the loft as he was trained in traditional lofts and

museums back east- the sails he creates are both durable and artful

given their historic flavor, whether intended for a classic yacht, day

sailer or offshore cruising vessel. His years at sea provide insights

into what works, and what just plain doesn’t. When not afloat you may

find him tromping through the forest and foraging for wild mushrooms or

messing about on his farm with his family.
