A Gig Harbor-area homeowner Thursday shot and wounded a stranger he said was trying to enter his home without permission, deputies reported.

The condition of the wounded man was not available Thursday night. The homeowner was not arrested.

The shooting occurred about 5 p.m. in the 5700 block of Ray Nash Drive Northwest, which is southwest of the city of Gig Harbor.

The homeowner told deputies a man drove up to his home in a black pickup, got out and started making his way toward the home’s front door, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The homeowner, who was armed with a handgun, went outside to confront the man and repeatedly asked him what he wanted, Troyer said.

The stranger ignored the homeowner’s questions and repeated warnings not to try to enter the house, Troyer said.

The homeowner, whose wife and teenage children were inside the home, shot the man once in the back when he walked inside the house anyway, Troyer said.

The homeowner then called 911 to report the shooting.

The man who was shot was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
