Pierce Deputy Cleared In Shooting Of Suspect
Deputy Carl Shanks opened fire on a man after a chase in September across the Kitsap Peninsula.

BREMERTON, WA - The Pierce County Deputy who shot a suspect in the head after a car chase in September has been cleared. Kitsap County Prosecutor Tina Robinson said deputy Carl Shanks did not act with malice when he shot Brent Lee Heath
The shooting happened Sept. 21 after Shanks tried to pull Heath over along the Key Peninsula Highway. The chase lasted about 20 miles and ended in Port Orchard. The shooting happened when Shanks and another deputy were trying to prevent Heath from driving off. Shanks fired one shot at Heath's car because Shanks believed Heath was about to hit the other deputy.
Heath survived the shooting. Pierce County deputies were involved in another shooting that same night. Deputies shot and killed a suicidal man armed with a knife in Spanaway along the 200 block of 78th St. Court E.
