Tips for Seniors Moving During the Holidays
By: Tom Stanfield, director of marketing and sales for Heron's Key
The stress of moving can get in the way of life. Whenever you are moving, but especially during the holidays, follow these simple tips to help alleviate the stress of downsizing:
1. Verify what records can be shredded. Often times, people will move old files that are no longer necessary. Check with your tax preparer and financial advisor to see which items you should keep and which ones are no longer needed.
2. Consider engaging the services of a move manager. They will help with navigating through the clutter that is accumulated over time. This simple step helps to eliminate much of the stress and anxiety associated with a move.

3. Always inquire about senior discounts. Seniors don’t ask for additional discounts and just assume there is a senior rate, but most times, bigger savings are available to them.
Once the move is complete it is important to acclimate to the new environment. Most communities will help by providing neighbors with ambassadors to welcome them into the fold. It is also up to the new neighbor to engage in activities and take the time to get to know others.

4. Volunteer. There is no better way to get to know new neighbors and members of the greater community by volunteering. Help at the information desk at the local hospital, read to kids at the elementary school or volunteer to organize the toy or food drive within the retirement community.
5. Engage in social activities. Accept invitations to the holiday parties from neighbors and attend outings the retirement community arranges.
