1. Weekly food safety inspection results for Tri-Cities area (tri-cityherald.com subscription) — Kennewick diners can see how several Canal Drive spots did in late-August health inspections, with no failing scores and one perfect result. Benton Franklin Health District focused on fair food safety but still checked Ahava Coffee Roasters, Azteca, Nanis and Wok King, all of which passed with only minor red or blue violations.
2. Kennewick coffee shop turns vintage van into veterans fundraiser (yaktrinews.com) — Rockabilly Roasting Company in downtown Kennewick is raffling off a custom 1985 Toyota van through November to raise $3,000–$5,000 for the Columbia Basin Veterans Center. Buying a $55 "van bundle" at the shop on West Kennewick Avenue gets you coffee, merch, and a raffle ticket, while directly supporting local veterans' services.
3. Commerce awards $1.35 million to Mid-Columbia schools, other project for energy efficiency (tricitiesbusinessnews.com) — Kennewick School District will receive about $748,000, the largest local share of new state energy-efficiency funding, to audit buildings and cut energy use and costs. Several neighboring districts and a Columbia Center-area redevelopment project also secured grants, but Kennewick schools stand to benefit most from the Clean Buildings Performance Standard program.
4. U.S. gets second guilty plea in scheme that victimized 518 farmworkers (capitalpress.com) — A former employee of Kennewick-based farm labor contractor Harvest Plus has pleaded guilty in a federal labor-fraud case involving more than 500 Mexican farmworkers in Eastern Washington. The plea details underpayment, improper job placements, and illegal charges for housing and transportation, while the company's owner remains jailed in Benton County awaiting trial.
5. Tyson selling Pasco plant, wildfires, homelessness shifts. Top August stories (tri-cityherald.com) — Kennewick readers saw plenty of drama in August, from a 10-foot pet boa constrictor that bit a sitter and escaped under a shed to a 99-year-old downtown business founder still working four days a week. The month's top stories also covered homelessness funding, wildfire evacuations, and major job uncertainty at Tyson's Pasco beef plant affecting many Tri-Cities families.
