📰 News we're reading

1. Crime Stoppers offers reward in unsolved 2006 Kirkland, WA murder case (fox13seattle.com) — Kirkland police are renewing attention on the unsolved 2006 killing of 23-year-old resident John Austin Schuoler, found beaten in his Kirkland apartment, and Crime Stoppers is now offering a $1,000 reward for tips. Investigators hope someone in the community will finally come forward, especially anyone who recalls details from that September evening or has information about his missing green REI backpack.

2. Drivers on I-405 face more closures this week (mynorthwest.com) — If you drive I-405 through Kirkland, expect major overnight lane and ramp closures this week between Kirkland and Totem Lake for pavement repairs. Northbound lanes and key ramps, including SR 520 connections and the Northeast 124th and 128th Street ramps, will close from 9 p.m. to early morning, so plan for delays and follow posted detours to avoid getting stuck.

3. Redmond teacher sent sexual messages to a fictitious 13-year-old girl, prosecutors say (theolympian.com) — A Redmond private school teacher who lives in Kirkland was charged in 2024 with four counts of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes after explicit online chats with an undercover Seattle officer posing as a 13-year-old girl; those charges were later dismissed without prejudice. The story details the allegations, his role at Brighton Academy, and court-ordered restrictions during his release.

4. How Regional Collaboration Can Help Local Governments Rethink Capacity and Deliver Climate Action (mrsc.org) — Kirkland is highlighted as part of the Eastside Climate Partnership, where several Eastside cities are teaming up to share staff, tools, and funding strategies for climate projects. The piece explains how collaborations like Energy Smart Eastside can help Kirkland and its neighbors move from climate planning to on-the-ground action, and offers ideas local officials could adapt to boost capacity and secure more resources.

5. WA father sues school district for denying religious opt-out from LGBTQ instruction (adfmedia.org) — A new federal lawsuit targets the Lake Washington School District, which serves Kirkland, after a father says his religious requests to opt his son out of LGBTQ-related instruction were largely denied. Backed by Alliance Defending Freedom, he argues the district's policies violate his constitutional parental rights, raising questions for Kirkland families about how classroom content and opt-outs are handled.
