📰 News we're reading

• Tech institute deploys Amazon's Just Walk Out checkout-free technology (retailcustomerexperience.com) — Students, staff, and visitors at Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland now have 24/7 access to a new checkout-free campus store powered by Amazon's Just Walk Out technology. The walk-in market, run by 365 Retail Markets and Evergreen Refreshments, aims to ease lunchtime congestion and replace limited vending options with a broader selection of food and drinks.

• Thinking About Moving? These 10 U.S. Cities Rank Highest for Quality of Life (housebeautiful.com) — Kirkland earns a national spotlight as one of the top 10 U.S. cities for quality of life, praised for its lakeside setting, lively downtown, and strong tech-driven economy. The article notes high median incomes, abundant restaurants, galleries, and shopping, plus tips for boosting well-being at home wherever you live.

• The geographic divide in WA natural gas usage (seattletimes.com) — Kirkland households rely on natural gas for heat at one of the higher rates on the Eastside, with about 49% of homes using it, meaning local residents could feel the impact of Washington's renewed push toward electric heating. A recent state Supreme Court ruling striking down Initiative 2066 reopens the door for decarbonization policies, which may eventually require costly heat pump conversions for many homeowners.
