Why Next Monday Won’t Suck

Geoffrey Castle and Dan Connolly add flare to Kirkland's music scene at the Wilde Rover.

I arrived at work this past Monday morning, booted up my computer, and found its space bar didn’t work.  Great.  I raised my eyebrow at three thoughts: (1) isn’t it interesting how, without warning at all, my computer just stops working; (2) it’s terrible that my life is so dependent on a programmable machine made of silicon and plastic; and (3) it’s Monday and there’s no other way to explain it: today sucks.

Most of my day was spent trying to fix the unfixable; a broken keypad, which turns out to be a defective motherboard, which ultimately means a morning wasted without me billing a single hour in a legal profession that depends on me billing hours.  Around noon, however, I received a text from my good college friend Sara asking if I wanted to join her at the Wilde Rover that evening for some great music.  The answer, in that moment, was resoundingly easy:  Yes!

Geoffrey Castle and Dan Connolly perform nearly every Monday night together at Kirkland’s .  Named for the Irish writer and poet Oscar Wilde, the bar and restaurant is a rich assortment of Celtic and Irish décor, with a flare for thick brew, friendly atmosphere and free entertainment that is sure to please. I caught up with Geoffrey and Dan after Monday night’s show.

who turns the classical into classic with his patented electric violin.  His Geoffrey Castle's Celtic Christmas will surely sell out this December 9 at so get your tickets early (www.kpcenter.org).  Connolly, who is a US Navy deep sea diver turned musician, charms his audience with riotous Irish drinking songs combined with a healthy mix of original material.  He will be showing off his rock talents this Saturday, September 3, during a performance at Redmond’s SecondStory Repertory (www.secondstoryrep.org).

Both Castle and Connolly, sly as they are, mentioned to me during our post-show chat – in strictest confidence of course – that this coming Monday, September 5, as part of Wilde Rover's Labor Day extravaganza, the captain of the crab fishing vessle the Cornelia Marie, who is featured on the Discovery Channel’s popular show Deadliest Catch, will be in attendance to hand out prizes during their show.

Wilde Rover bids all its patrons "Céíad míle fáilte," which means 100,000 welcomes.  With the help of Castle and Connolly, this coming Monday should be one hundred thousand times better than any other Monday.  So, I welcome Monday, which doesn’t have to suck any more!
